The album that put Farmer Jason on the map, or in this case, the nature trail and won him an Emmy for Best Children’s Show, has been reissued through Courageous Chicken Entertainment. This label houses most of the original creator Jason Ringenberg’s musical releases. Nature Jams is available now on all digital streaming platforms like YouTube, Apple Music, and Spotify.
“… serious message about active lifestyles and exploring nature gets just the right spoonful of sugar with some lively music that should please kids without boring their parents”- All Music
Originally released in 2012 through MyKaZoo Music and TV (Universal Music Enterprises), Nature James was an ambitious project for Jason Ringenberg as he created his children’s music path after the tremendous success of his groundbreaking music group Jason & The Scorchers. The original album package included a CD, a DVD with four videos, and a 21-page booklet.
Featured artists on Nature Jams range from banjoist Alison Brown, bassist Mike Mills (R.E.M.), songwriters Todd Snider, Iris Dement Brandi Carlile, country legend Suzy Bogguss and THE Webb Wilder, with songs like “Take A Hike,” “Dison The Bison,” and “The Moose Lives Where?.” One special moment with Brandi Carlile was when Jason asked her to be on this album; she was on tour and did her vocals on the tour bus! The song “Have You Ever” is a song from her catalog made into a duet with Farmer Jason.
The conversations between Jason and his friends are still as hilarious as they once were as they talk about the song they are about to sing. Even the studio was filled with laughter, fun, and guest appearances from rock drummer Steve Gorman (Trigger Hippy, The Black Crowes), Irish Celtic favorites The Saw Doctors, to legendary punk rock pioneer Tommy Ramone of The Ramones on the mandolin! Various other luminary artists joined in the studio fun; multi-instrumentalist Fats Kaplin (John Prine, Jack White), drummer Steve Ebe, and his longtime guitarist and producer George Bradfute. Nature Jams marks the last time he and his band, Jason & The Scorchers, ever recorded in the studio together.
The press and radio both ate up this. It was refreshing to hear, and everyone loved it, from children and parent magazines to the usual mainstream music publications that follow Jason Ringenberg. These songs continue to be played on radio nationwide, from WXNA in Nashville to KDHX in St. Louis to KTAL in Texas and all the way to California; Farmer Jason is a dose of energy from morning shows to the weekend.
“His honesty, genuineness, engaging nature and fun-loving style make him a natural children’s entertainer and makes Nature Jams such a true and cool extension of his natural character” – Saving Country Music
In one big swoop, Jason could grab his rock ‘n’ roll fans, who had all recently become parents around the same time, and they could share Farmer Jason with their kids. It has been a generation-connecting experience. Those fans bring their children who grew up to be grandparents and bring the grandchildren to shows all the time. This still happens to this day… some 11 years later.
“This is the most ambitious and accomplished collection yet from the Farmer Jason collective and underlines the unique nature of both sides of his talent and longevity” – Lonesome Highway
About Farmer Jason – Farmer Jason is the brainchild of rock music legend Jason Ringenberg of Jason and the Scorchers. An Americana Music Association Lifetime Achievement Award winner, Ringenberg is one of the pioneers of the modern Americana and alt-country genres. In 2002 he created Farmer Jason to educate and entertain children about farm life and the wonders of nature. The character is based on his farming background and love of the great outdoors. As Farmer Jason, he has released four records and a DVD. He has starred in the It’s A Farmer Jason video interstitial program which airs on several PBS stations around the United States, earning four Emmy nominations and one Emmy win in 2009. Farmer Jason’s records have won numerous awards, including the Parent’s Choice Gold Award and the Los Angeles Times Children’s Record of the Year list.
Farmer Jason has performed several thousand concerts in venues ranging from rural fairs on the Alaskan tundra to posh European performance halls. The highly acclaimed live show involves sing-alongs, dancing, and discussions about nature appreciation, ecology, and farm animals. Farmer Jason performs solo with just his acoustic guitar (no backing track gimmickry), which adds to his concerts’ spontaneous, high-energy nature. Although aimed at children ages 2 to 8, everyone is invited to get involved; Farmer Jason draws his musical influences from folk, country, and rock ‘n’ roll with a dash of DIY punk rock. Grab a pitchfork or your guitar and climb aboard the tractor!
