Joey Sommerville, aka “Papa J” is ringing in the season with a fresh, innovative version of the holiday classic “O Holy Night.”
“It was always one of my favorite Christmas songs growing up.” says Sommerville, aka “Papa J.” “Every year at Christmas time, Mrs. Harrison would sing it as a solo at my church. She had a beautiful classical soprano voice with a tone as clear as a bell… that was “her” song for sure!”
Fast forward to today, Joey has crafted an instrumental version with the help of not one, but two Hall of Famers! The single features the artistry of 2018 Sacred Steel Hall Of Fame inductee, Dante Harmon on lap steel guitar and Alabama Jazz Hall of Famer Eric Essix on electric guitar. “I love the interplay between myself, Dante and Eric on the song. They’re both heavily steeped in church music, BUT we ALL know how to make the spot hot on the blues and jazz side when it’s time!”
Joey will be performing his version of “O Holy Night” at a special holiday guest appearance with his longtime friend and saxophonist Gary Harris at the venerable Eddie’s Attic in Decatur, GA, on December 3rd.
The holiday single sets the table for Joey’s upcoming album due early 2020. You can get a peep of Joey’s new vibe by checking out the self-empowerment anthem “Might As Well Be You” on YouTube, featuring footage from around the world, including the paradise of Majorca, Spain and the smiling faces of the Big Brothers Big Sisters Organization. Good Times all around.
“O Holy Night” will be available on all digital platforms through The Orchard (Sony) on Black Friday, November 29th
